Job Description

A large municipal government organization serving California's capital city is seeking a Legal Secretary (Temporary, Potential Temp-to-Hire) to provide administrative and litigation support across multiple practice areas. This position will support attorneys in civil litigation matters and assist multiple divisions as needed. The ideal candidate has prior law firm or public-sector legal experience, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities:

Litigation & Legal Support

* Provide legal secretarial support for civil litigation matters, with insurance defense experience considered a plus
* Assist with discovery responses, including document organization and assembly
* Support attorneys with deposition preparation and scheduling
* Maintain and manage litigation calendars, including hearings, deadlines, and court appearances
* Assist with drafting, formatting, and assembling legal documents, including motions and MSJs
* Provide case management support using ProLaw or similar systems (preferred)
* Back up legal secretaries across multiple divisions, supporting up to four practice groups as needed

Administrative & Team Support

* Assist attorneys and legal staff with day-to-day administrative support
* Coordinate workflows to ensure timely completion of assignments and filings
* Collaborate with team members to meet deadlines and maintain consistency across divisions
* Adapt to shifting priorities while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail

Qualifications:

* Prior legal secretary experience supporting civil litigation matters
* Experience with discovery, depositions, calendaring, and document assembly
* Familiarity with insurance defense practices preferred
* ProLaw or comparable case management experience is a plus
* Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office and standard legal software
